Managing European resources, joint-co-operation strategies, economic and political wellbeing, policy-making and legislative compliance are some of the key issues of European governance. The EU is the world’s biggest trader. Its influence extends through a web of bilateral and multilateral agreements covering most countries and regions of the globe.
From improving driving conditions on European roads to regional and international aid for economically deprived regions, there is a need to collect, manage and store vast quantities of information, to better understanding issues affecting resource planning and policymaking.
This is a natural area for digital mapping techniques and Geographic Information Systems, which enables multiple disparate databases to be integrated and queried based in their locational characteristics. Business critical data sets such as statistical and geodemographic information can be interrogated to determine the influence of other external economic or environmental factors. Relationships emerge which help analyse and predict the best use of resources, areas of greater need, or efficiencies gained.
