A carbon footprint is an indication of the impact of human activities on the environment. Carbon footprints are calculated in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced and measured in weight of carbon dioxide. They are useful for individuals and organisations to conceptualise their impact on global warming and hence climate change.
A carbon footprint can be best calculated by thinking about the full life cycle of a product or service. For example, in ordering some office chairs, things a company needs to think about include the amount and type of energy required to manufacture each component, the means of transport of each component to the assembly plant and the transport to and from the furniture supplier.
